I had asked this question once before with no response, I thought I'd try again. The specific application is a JD material collection system with hydraulic dump but I think the issue is more generic. The dump comes down twisted and does not come down far enough to latch closed. It doesn't happen all of the time - maybe 30%. It would appear that one side (a cylinder on each side) is not pulling its weight. Can this happen? Can a cylinder go bad in an intermittent fashion? I have checked all other linkage and it would seem that everything is in order but I don't want to order (and pay) for a new cylinder if that isn't/can't be the problem.Thanks

Norm:If your dump goes up correctly there a good change the problem is not the cylinder. If you have bent a cylinder you would most likely never get it all the way down.I don't know the specifics of your system but a lot of dumping units only power the cylinders up and let gravity bring it back down so just the weight of the load and restrictions on oil flow out of the cylinders determine the way the dump will lower. There may be something binding in the dump system or a flow restriction in the hoses to that cylinder. Good luck ....

New Holland's collection system that I am familiar has the cylinders located inside the telescoping rectangular tubes that support the box. I have seen debris get packed around a cylinder, preventing it from pivoting slightly on its barrel-end pin. This caused uneven return of the box, as you are experiencing. Disassembly & cleaning was all that was needed in the NH, if your machine's design is similar, the trouble could be also. ....
